Footnotes

  • A letter from the Nationalmuseet, Denmark, written in 1986, records that the inscription on this mangling board translates to read 'In the year 1742, BK on the 12th of ?' and 'Gudrun Bjarnesdatter is the legal owner of this mangle board and has obtained it in an honest way'. The same letter notes that a similar mangling board - dated 24 May 1743 - was then in Reykjavik Museum. The mangling board in this lot was photographed by the Nationalmuseet in 1959, when it 'belonged to a private collector'.
