揚州自古繁庶,南梁殷芸小說中一句「腰纏十萬貫,騎鶴上揚州」即是最佳註腳,而京杭大運河的開通,令地處南北水陸交通要津的揚州,在唐是「天下之富揚為首」,在宋則為「淮左名都」,經濟繁榮,文藝亦隨之興盛。明清間揚州為兩淮鹽運漕運中心,萬商雲集,乃東南一大都會。康乾南巡數過揚州,揚州成為風尚華離之所,阮元在李斗《揚州畫舫錄》序中謂揚州「土沃風淳」、「士日以文,民日以富」,而這「恩澤稠疊」的盛況,卻在道光三十(1853)年春嘎然而止。是年三月,太平天國軍陷南京,改名天京,清軍旋即在其東郊及揚州建立江南、江北大營,以抗衡圍剿,揚州淪為兩軍對壘的戰場。太平軍於咸豐三至八(1853-1858)年間三破揚城,七大藏書樓之一的文匯閣難逃浩劫,包括《四庫全書》在內的七萬九千餘卷藏書毀於一旦。汪鋆於城破前攜老母及幼女傖惶逃至城北二十餘里的北湖黃珏橋,期間作《北湖避冦草》,集詩四十餘首,述盡戰火帶來的破壞與災難以及顛沛流離的艱辛。此後他被迫流寓泰州逾十年之久,待太平軍亂平息,揚州「存者惟荒林古剎,殘碑斷甃,支離於灌莽風煙中」,廣陵昔日之芳華,惟有向畫中尋了。

據硯山跋,早在道光己酉(1849)他便以所見揚州湖上諸勝繪為一冊,癸丑(1853)後散佚,此冊乃重繪前冊,又附以俗尚食物,「俾觀者知吾揚風景如此」。全冊構圖時出新意,筆意秀雅靈動,撫今追昔之意,「流露於煙墨間」,不啻為簡繪本《揚州畫舫錄》,袁枚《畫舫錄》序言云「臥而觀之,方知閒居展卷,勝於騎鶴來游也」,用於硯山此冊,亦非過譽也。

是冊硯山繪二十四開,題跋吟詠者,兩淮鹽運使方濬頤在內,凡二十八家,跋止於光緒十六年(1890),歷十四載,計二十三開。無論在官在野,咸為雅好詩文金石之仝好,有姚正鏞、王菼、李祖望、劉壽曾、凌霞、方鼎鋭、夏子鐊、吳昆田、黃宗彥、張雲鵬、陳彝、李汝麐、芮曾麐、丁國瑞、熊丕筠、劉溎年、萬同倫、莊忠棫、于寶之、梅毓、葉惠心,亦有顧澐、王素以畫名者,茲擇部分簡介錄之:

方濬頤(1815-1888),字子箴,號夢園、忍齋。安徽定遠人。道光二十四年(1844)進士,歷任浙、贛、豫、魯道御史、兩廣鹽運使、四川按察使等職。同治八年(1869),官兩淮鹽運使,在任十年,尤多善政。方氏仿效前任曾賓谷,於使署恢復題襟館,納四海文人雅士,宴集吟詠,輯成《題襟館倡和集》,汪鋆亦為題襟館座上賓,為忍齋作有〈題襟館消夏圖〉。解後主講梅花書院,長居揚州城內灣子街,廣攬賢能,校刊群籍。《皖志列傳》載其「才思敏捷,極善言吐,又能著書,刊行詩達四千首,六十歲後終日研究諸子史傳,撰寫隨筆,日一篇或三五篇,筆耕不輟」。有《夢園書畫錄》、《忍齋詩贅》、《二知軒詩鈔》傳世。

姚正鏞,字仲海,齋號轉蓬吟館、遲雲山館、穜松堂、槐廬。遼寧蓋平(今屬營口)人。能詩,工書畫,嗜收藏,尤深金石之學。《續纂泰州志》稱其「性耽風雅,喜結納文士。咸豐中客泰州,顏其齋曰遲雲山館。」太平亂止後汪鋆拜吳讓之為師,據《揚州畫苑錄》二人「終日晤於泰州姚氏遲雲山館」。存世有《槐廬印譜》。

李祖望(1814-1881),字賓嵎。江蘇江都(今屬揚州)人。增貢生。邃於經史、金石、小學。著有《小學類編》,風行海內。汪鋆著《十二硯齋過眼錄》,賴其襄助,復以為序。

方鼎銳,字子穎,號退齋。江蘇儀徵人。咸豐壬子(1852)舉人,中書入直軍機處章京。同治十年(1871)任浙江溫處道。工書善畫,山水用筆簡淡,惜不多作。曾為汪鋆《清湘老人題記》作序,汪為其作〈春風並轡圖〉,見《揚州畫苑錄》卷二。

劉壽曾(1838-1882),字恭甫。江蘇儀徵人。文琪孫,毓松子,祖孫三人均以治《左傳》聞,乃揚州學術中堅。汪鋆曾與劉弟貴曾共同纂修《揚州府誌》,劉為分纂,汪為分校。

Album of twenty-four leaves of painting and twenty-one leaves of calligraphy, ink and color on paper, or ink on paper, each leaf inscribed by the artist with his seals, with colophons by thirty calligraphers, the final two leaves of the album each dated by the artist to the second year of Guangxu reign (1876), with a collector's seal reading Zhuo'an suode.

    款識:
    (一)東園探梅。去城最近,正月遊人叢集,試茗坐花,殆無虛日。
    (二)《爾雅》鮤鱴刀疏,今之鮆魚也。《山海經》鮆魚狹薄而長頭,大者尺餘,一名刀魚。王逢詩「如刀江鮆白盈尺」者是也。揚俗五辛盤外,撃鮮為尚,饕餮者能無滋饞吻乎。
    (三)揚之北門外,葉侍郎墓後有土阜,高十餘丈。二月間,土人於墳上放紙鳶、擲瓦碟於翁仲帽上,以卜幸獲,謂之飛堶,浸以成俗。
    (四)里中少年嘗於二月二日送土地燈,尚生子之喜,果一索得男,則以十倍荅神庥。故董愛江揚州竹枝詞有「土地燈完二月中」之句。
    (五)桃花庵前水,純是桃花色。花似去年紅,劉郎頭已白。白頭不歸去,又遇兩寒色。食故里三春,花遊䜩屬何。客曾賓谷先生桃花庵詩。
    (六)清明三月紙鳶風。
    (七)《平山堂志》謂「篠園花瑞在三賢祠,西有亭曰瑞芍。揚州芍藥甲天下,多至三十九種。園中有雙歧竝萼,攢三聚五,皆舊所未存。故稱花瑞焉」。
    (八)八鮮供佛市爭趨,玉版參來撒火珠。學得秦中好風俗,居然櫻筍合成廚。
    (九)龍舟自五月朔至十八日為一市,每於紅橋外極空闊處,竭水嬉能事,有打招掉梢等技,甚以乳鴨擲水中,舟人飛身泅水搶之,以資笑樂,殆即古人之奪標之類歟。
    (十)水國鮮非小,山僧飯有餘。新羅山人筆意。
    (十一)六月十八為觀音香市,夕陽時,遊船群集蓮花橋下,舟皆揚去頂篷,空明露生,打槳如飛,往來梭織,俗謂之「跑水馬」,即此事也。
    (十二)水殿風微送晚涼,蘭湯浴後理殘妝。口噙瑪瑙頭簪玉,只許郎看不近郎。
    (十三)湖上草堂東,築隄廿餘丈。北對春水廊,南在湖中,上種杉桐榆柳,下植紅白荷花。隄盡構方亭,為遊人觀蓮之所。吞吐湖光,低徊香氣,極炎天曠覽之趣。
    (十四)斑魚、茭白,極湖鄉風味。
    (十五)蓮性老桂,甲於揚州。每逢中秋,酒榼雜沓,往往然也。
    (十六)中秋食品甚多,二者為劇。
    (十七)傍花村居,人多種菊,薜蘿周匝,完若牆壁,南鄰北宅,園種戶植,連架接蔭,生意各殊。沈學子大成詩云「杖藜城外去,一徑入煙村。碧樹平圍野,黃花直到門。亂雅投屋背,老㹀繫籬根。寂寞深秋意,王蒙小筆存。」
    (十八)《夢華錄》載重陽日都人各以粉麵蒸糕遺送,上插剪綵小旗,俗尚相沿,不獨吾揚然也。
    (十九)鐵佛寺香黃葉。
    (二十)尖臍肥處菊猶黃,酒盞何辭右手將。寄語吳興饞太守,霜風容易遇湖鄉。畫蟹不能辨別尖團,以詩辨之,不禁失笑。
    (二十一)道光庚子(1840)十一月,與郭少卿、吳筱、莊幼蓮暨倪種雲同聚,三來酒市,種雲曾寫〈紅橋買醉圖〉,少卿為之序。亂後圖佚,而諸君亦復先後謝世。今復為圖,不禁有碩果僅存之嘆。
    (二十二)我有旨蓄,亦以御冬。
    (二十三)山堂積雪。揚州十二月皆有遊賞,或即其地,或即其事,幾無虛時。癸丑亂後,湖山勝地什不存一二,憶而寫此,亦微寓〈清明上河圖〉之意。迴首當年,能無慨嘆。時光緒二年(1876)八月,六一翁汪鋆並記。
    (二十四)非神非鬼鬧街頭,豈有黃羊作薦羞。假託衣冠猶舞蹈,是何面目也干求。蓮花唱出憐同乞,臘鼓喧來媚未休。盜取虛聲惟一好,由它陋俗說揚州。和吳蓮芬歲殘四韻之作。分寫揚州十二月習俗好尚小物以事,各繫數言,以為紀風土事可也。若謂以之諷習俗也,則吾豈敢。光緒二年(1876)八月六十一翁汪鋆並識。

    (三)原序。揚州自漢以來為一大都會,沿及本朝財賦人物之盛,園㞐服御之美,尤甲於天下。在昔乘輿南巡,維揚巨商爭先置頓,靡金錢百萬,構園一所。其時,郊外樓閣鱗比,草木皆綈錦光飾,人民熙熙,樂而遊觀,嗚乎盛矣!百餘年來,倍漸苦窳,巡幸之所,亦隤毁略盡,存者惟荒林古剎,殘碑斷甃,支離於灌莽風煙中。當秋蕭條,貧士謀埜,或撫今悼昔,攄懷舊之蓄念,不知涕泗之何從也。汪君汪度,工繪事,題詠不得志於時,往往適野而歌,愴懷前跡,撫揚州所存諸勝以寄意。凡郊墅臺榭及寺觀遊覽,略具於冊。余觀其所為,𥥆然,蒼然,墨妙不可知,而撫今追昔之意,則已流露於煙墨間,有不勝慨者。昔李明徑斗著《畫舫錄》紀揚州景物之盛,數十年來,讀者繹其文,神遊其宇,每不禁慨想而追慕之。今觀是圖,亦得不俛仰今昔而悢然淒以悲也。冰叔李肇増。
