    註:本幅原為周麟舊藏。周麟(1915-1970),上世紀三十年代入讀北平中法大學孔德學院高中部,因成績優異而被選派留學法國,乃中法庚子賠款的最後一批公費留學生。周氏熱衷藝術,活躍於上世紀四、五十年代的巴黎藝壇。一九四四年,他以學者及潘玉良經紀人身份與潘氏一起加入法國中華藝術家協會 (Association des Artistes Chinois en France),一九五八年正式擔任該協會主席。多年來,周氏透過舉辦展覽、撰文及出版,積極推動中國藝術在法國的普及與發展。其所藏近現代中國書畫甚豐,就市場流出所見,不乏精品,抱石四十年代佳作〈屈原〉、〈醉僧圖〉皆為其舊藏,本幅亦乃其一,上世紀八十年代末於本港釋出,經曹氏默齋手,歸費立哲神父蝸居齋珍藏,不覺竟已整整四十年了。

    上世紀四十年代,傅抱石攜家人居住在重慶西郊歌樂山以西的崇山峻嶺中,川西山區多雨,每到夏季,狂暴的山雨襲來,四周頓時混沌一片。待暴雨過後,河水迅速上漲,匯聚成瀑,於山間挾帶泥石,呼嘯而下,蔚為壯觀。往來任教於沙坪壩的中央大學,傅抱石在途中常遇此景。攝人心魄的視覺衝擊,為他帶來強烈的創作慾,瀑布乃傅抱石愛寫、擅寫的題材,「一半山川帶雨痕」亦成為抱石山水的標幟。

    此幅〈夏山觀瀑圖〉正是創作於這一時期。畫面見重巖疊幛,泉匯成瀑,層層迴環,飛流直下。近景平崖上,有高士二人,著上古衣冠,相對而坐,手之舞之,談笑風生;右側立一童子,幾不辨頭面,僅以極簡筆點成紅衣,與二高士構成三角形,在直線條與橫線條滿佈的畫面中,平添不規則,成為畫面焦點。

    「瀑布」也稱作「水口」,非涓涓細流,其大開大合之勢,單勾線或暈染不足寫照,乃山水畫中最難表現的大自然神韻。明唐志契《繪事微言》有云:「水口之難畫,難在峽中流出,有璇環直捷之勢,點滴俱動,乃為活水。蓋水口比石不同,不得太硬,不得太軟,又不得太枯。軟則無勢,硬則刻板,枯則乾燥,故皆所忌。」傅抱石在深入觀察自然的基礎上,綜合前人之法,融入自己獨特的「抱石皴」,改以散筆皴擦,鋒毫夾水夾墨,快速在紙上掃出,恣意幻化的條條素練,便沃然紙上了。

    獨有水勢尚不足表現飛瀑,巖石之經營亦被視作「傅氏水口」的點睛之筆。此作中,石塊上層較巨,下層較小,排兵佈陣,咸合自然。水流穿石隙而過,改道時激濺的水花四射,尤為生動。時值西川盛夏,然山中幽林繁密,少見日光。傅抱石以濕筆濃墨渲染樹石,與瀑布之飛白形成對比,虛實相生。駐足觀畫,泉石激盪之聲宛然,使人憑添涼意,心曠神怡。
