Footnotes

  • Anton Sohn (German, 1769 - 1840) originally trained as a Church painter and was based in Zizenhausen from 1799. The present lot is an example of the minutely detailed 'Terrakotte,' figures from the period. Pieces such as these would depict spiritual motifs or folk musicians/ orchestral groups. Today's lot shows figures which might be examples of the Medieval artistic genre of the allegory of 'Danse Macabre.' The Danse Macabre typically showed deathly figures or skeletons summoning the living to join in their dance of the dead. The earliest recorded example was at Holy Innocent's Cemetery in Paris in the early 15th century.
