A large early Victorian figured walnut Canterbury by Gillows
Circa 1850, with two divisions, S-scroll end terminals and ring turned baluster stretchers, with central opposing foliate carved addorsed C-scrolled terminals, above one drawer, on lobed bun feet and recessed brass castors, stamped: 'GILLOW', 62cm wide x 47cm deep x 44cm high, (24in wide x 18 1/2in deep x 17in high)

  • The Gillow's design for a virtually identical Canterbury to the present lot appears in their Estimate Sketch Books for entries dated 1847 and is also illustrated in S. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol. II, 2008, Suffolk, pl. 638, p. 92. This particular model was carved by Robert Farmer who is documented as the master carver at Gillow & Co. at that time.

    Another closely comparable rosewood Canterbury by Gillows, which forms part of a private collection in Cheshire, has a pencil inscription which reads: 'Jas. Hartley, 1851 and evidently Hartley was one of the journeymen who worked for Gillow & Co. during this period.
