Footnotes

  • The children are from the Norris family of building contractors, Hackney, London. During the Victorian era the building company of William Norris, the children's father, undertook much of the housing development in the area of King Edward's Road and Well Street, Hackney.

    One possible reading of the signature is 'E Cocking'. If this is the case the artist could be identified as Edwin Cocking (British, 1818-1892).
