Footnotes

  • Provenance
    Private collection, UK.

Farriers were responsible for shoeing the regiment's horses as shown by the gold horseshoe badge on Simpson's right arm. They were also responsible for putting down injured animals and cutting off their hooves so that the War Office would have proof that the animal was dead and would therefore replace it. Hence the axe that he carries prominently. Their dirty jobs meant that they wore dark blue, rather than red, uniforms and did not wear the armour that all officers and Men of the Life Guards adopted after 1820. The same year saw the introduction of the tall bearskin cap.
