Footnotes

  • Though by nature a good man, the innkeeper Sajjan began stealing from people staying at his inn, and eventually turned to murdering them for their belongings (hence 'thug'). One night Guru Nanak and Mardana stayed at the inn, and the Guru sang a shabad which told how good deeds mean nothing if someone's heart is evil. Sajjan listened to this and realised his evil nature, fell on his knees before the Guru, and repented of what he had done.
