This is an extraordinary sculpture of impressive proportions: the exceptionally life-like eagle was carved from an immense ruby rough of evenly saturated reddish purple color with notably few inclusions. The majestic bird is depicted in a soaring position yet the artist demonstrates a remarkable sensitivity to the natural form and posture accurately suggesting air flow over the body as the eagle soars on a thermal with outstretched wings. The tail is carved and etched with incredibly detailed individual feathers, The beak and talons embellished with 18K yellow gold; the eyes inset with ruby cabochons. The bird elegantly perched atop a dark granite obelisk of tapering form which provides a dramatic color contrast to the rich red ruby.
