Rare, Very Large Snapping Turtle – Unique Framed Wall Mural with Preparation on the Obverse Side
Chisternon undatum
Eocene
Green River Formation, Wyoming

One of the largest of its kind ever discovered, this snapping turtle specimen is, arguably, one of the rarest of the turtles to be discovered in the 51-million-year-old limestone sediments of Wyoming's ancient Fossil Lake. Adding to its value and uniqueness, the superlative specimen has been specially prepared to allow both the plastron (underbelly of the shell) and carapace (top of the shell) to be seen: The limestone matrix has been removed from the plastron on the obverse side; when the mural is turned around, the plastron may be viewed.

Seen in the exact position in which it expired 51 million years ago, the rare snapping turtle exhibits extraordinary completeness and finely preserved detail. Amazingly, in the same layer of stone, a fish aspiration - a fish which died in the act of predation - is present. The two specimens, discovered together, represent an exceptional rarity. Framed in exotic wenge wood and cleated for ease of wall display. Matrix measuring 57 x 42in; Length of specimen measuring 50in; Shell of specimen measuring 21 x 17 ½in
