A Brass-Barrelled Flintlock Blunderbuss With Spring Bayonet

With two-stage barrel turned and belled at the muzzle and fitted with a spring bayonet above, octagonal breech engraved 'London' along the top flat and engraved with a line of beadwork at the rear, tang with bayonet-catch, signed border engraved flat bevelled lock (cock replaced) decorated with rocailles at the stepped tail, figured full stock (split in the ramrod-channel) carved with a shell behind the barrel tang and with pineapple chequered grip, border engraved brass mounts comprising shaped bevelled side-plate decorated with a rocaille and flower-heads, butt-plate with an urn on the heel tang, trigger-guard with acorn finial and engraved with a flower-head on the flanged bow, ramrod-pipes (dented), and later copper-tipped ramrod, Tower private proof marks

  • The maker is almost certainly John 1 Wiggin who was free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1774, the same year he is recorded as 'Gunmaker, Glass House Yd'. The last reference to him is in 1786

26% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £20,000 up to and including £700,000;
20% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £700,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
