Footnotes

  • The Rolex Ref.5512 was introduced in 1958 and remained in production until 1978. The earliest examples, such as the present lot, housed the calibre 1530 and did not yet bear the 'Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified' writing on the dial. It is often argued among Rolex collectors that this type of two line dial is particularly attractive, as it has an especially clean look. The contrast between silvered and gilt writing adds further intrigue to the dial.

The Ref.5512 was the first Rolex diver's watch with crown guards for added protection. Rolex experimented with the shape of these protective shoulders around the crown which and finally settled on a pointed shape.
The early square crown guard, as can be seen on the present lot, have become increasingly sought after by collectors.
