The series of 'salon' paintings Cadell produced in the years before the Great War introduced a new theme to Modern British Art. Here, his most favoured model – Edinburgh society figure Miss Don Wauchope – is depicted more as a motif/fashion plate within a decorative setting, rather than in conventional portrait form. Often shown with features obscured in shadow, the figure is merely a part within a carefully-constructed decorative setting. The still-life is introduced as a vehicle for highlights of pure colour set against the lilac walls, striped fabric and polished floor.
