Footnotes

  • Launched in 1976, the Renault 5 Alpine (Renault 5 Gordini in the UK) was one of he very first 'Hot Hatches', pre-dating the Volkswagen GTi by a couple of months. The 'Alpine' part of the name referred to the eponymous tuning firm and sports car manufacturer, which had historically enjoyed close links with Renault and been absorbed as the latter's competitions department in the early 1970s. Powering the Alpine version was a 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine boasting a cross-flow cylinder head with hemispherical combustion chambers, which delivered its maximum of 92bhp via a five-speed gearbox. Stiffened suspension and alloy wheels were included in the package, and thus equipped the Renault 5 Alpine was good for a top speed of around 110mph (177km/h).

This particular Renault 5 Alpine was first registered in Greece in April 1978 and had enjoyed only three owners prior to its acquisition for the current vendor's private collection in 1999. We are advised that it comes with documented history from new. A full 'last nut and bolt' restoration was undertaken between 2000 and 2002, with many hard-to-find parts replaced with new-old-stock components including all lights, bumpers, wheels, door handles, upholstery, etc. Described by the vendor as in excellent running condition, this rare survivor of the early 'Hot Hatch' era is offered with Greek registration papers.

    Renault 5 Alpine 1978
