From the Jacques Vander Stappen Collection 1913 FN Type 2700 Tourer Chassis no. 637 Engine no. 637
Footnotes
FN – the "Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre" were renowned for quality machines from the moment that they transitioned from armaments to forms of transport. Bicycles came first, then exquisite motorcycles, some of which were powered by beautifully engineered in line four-cylinder motors. Alongside early motorcycle products, they dabbled with car manufacture before dividing in headlong in 1906. Manufacture of small cars began in 1908 with an 8/10-hp four-cylinder and a number of light cars was introduced during the following years until in late 1913 FN launched the popular "1250" at the Paris Salon.
One of the later models in the pre-war lifespan of FN, the Type 2700 benefits from the larger 85 x 120 mm, 2,724cc engine and a four-speed gearbox, it is thought that a mere 16 of these 2700 series cars were built. This FN Touring car is understood to have been delivered on 23 January 1913 and would later see service as a fire assisting appliance – a not uncommon fate for many Edwardian cars. Found in need of work by Jacques Vander Stappen and later bodied in the purposeful touring form that we see here today, it has been tastefully finished in a rich petrol blue scheme for the bodywork atop a burgundy red chassis and appointed with accoutrements including black leather upholstery and top.
