FRED RICH: A unique silver and enamelled vase
London 1993, signed 'Fred Rich 1993', mark for Garrard & Co Ltd, also special mark for Garrard's 150th year, also engraved 'Designed for Garrard & Co Ltd 112 Regent St'
Tapering form, vividly enamelled with a marine scene, depicting a lobster, a fish, cuttlefish and a clam amongst waves and bubbles, outlined and picked out by gold cloisonné wires, a sense of depth and movement heightened by the textured silver surface appearing through the bright enamel, with everted silver rim and gilt interior, rounded foot.
height 24cm, weight total 18.3oz.

Provenance
Purchased by the current owner from Garrard's 150th Exhibition in 1993.

  • FRED RICH (1954)

    Fred Rich (born 1954) studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London, first taking the foundation course and, later, jewellery design. It was on this course that Rich started to experiment with bold colours and enamelling, a medium that has become his trademark. He has won numerous accolades including the coveted Jacques Cartier award, and his work features in the collection of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths amongst others.

    The current lot was one of the pieces exhibited by Garrard in its 'Royal Goldsmiths' Exhibition' celebrating the 150th anniversary of being appointed Crown Jewellers. It was illustrated in the Financial Times on 22nd May 1993.
    The success of this exhibition led to Fred Rich holding his first one man show in 1994.
