Footnotes

  • HIROSHI SUZUKI (1961)

Hiroshi Suzuki has an extraordinary talent for raising silver from single flat sheets to create vessels that are full of flowing, vigorous, graceful lines. His work is intuitive and combines traditional skills with a unique and personal visual vocabulary.
Vases are Hiroshi Suzuki's 'signature form' and are titled around the four elements, Earth-Reki, Ayawind, Miyani-Fire and Aqua-Poesy.

He was born in Sendai, Miyagi, Japan in 1961 and studied at Musashino Art University in Tokyo before coming to London to study at Camberwell College of Art and the Royal College of Art. After graduating with an MA in 1999 he set up a studio in Camberwell with fellow students.
His first major selling exhibition was in 2000 and in 2002 Suzuki had his own workshop at the Harley Foundation on the Welbeck Estate in Nottingham.
In 2003 Suzuki held his first solo exhibition in the UK, titled 'Statis in Motion' at the Lesley Graze Gallery.
In 2005 he was short-listed for the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize: Metal (UK), and he won the Schoonhoven Silver Award in 2009 (The Netherlands).
A retrospective exhibition was held at The Goldsmiths Company entitled 'Silver Waves' in 2010.
He is currently Professor of Metalwork and Jewellery at Musashino Art University, with studios in Tokyo and London.
Hiroshi Suzuki's works appear in numerous public collections including The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths'.
