Provenance Private Collection, Northern California Acquired directly from the above by the present owner
Born in 1943 in Springfield, Illinois, David Hammons moved to Los Angeles in 1963 to study art at Los Angeles City College. He later transferred to Los Angeles Trade Technical College and began taking night classes at Otis Art Institute, where he worked with renowned artist Charles White.
Untitled, 1969 is from the artist's time in Los Angeles, he would later settle in New York City in 1974. Hammons' abstraction in enamel on Masonite shows a seldom-seen painterly side of his early work. The element of chance ties this early enamel painting to many works in Hammons' oeuvre. The artist is best-known for the body prints that he was creating in the 1960's and onwards, in which models slathered with paint would press their bodies against blank canvases. Hammons even used his own body, smearing himself with grease and pressing himself against board or paper, and then setting the grease with a dusting of pigment. This results in a serendipitous but intentional outcome, as does the swirling, poured enamel within Untitled.
