Publisher's green cloth, covers with 3-rule border and publisher's monogram in blind, spines lettered in gilt, custom cloth drop back box with printed paper title label, recased with new endpapers, scuffing to upper front covers, volume one slightly shaken with gathering L pulling, volume one lacking final leaf (R4, blank except for imprint).
Provenance: Henry James Charles Leishman (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, of Hardy's "astronomical novel," a story of star-crossed lovers set against a scientific backdrop. "This slightly built romance was the out-come of a wish to set the emotional history of two infinitesimal lives against the stupendous background of the stellar universe" (Hardy, Preface, Wessex Edition, 1895).
