Publisher's cloth, upper cover and spine decoratively stamped in black and gilt, spines lettered in gilt and blind, lower cover with double-rule border in blind, custom cloth chemise and morocco backed box, minor rubbing at joints, light foxing to endpapers.

FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, FIRST ISSUE, Purdy's primary binding. Controversial upon publication for its frank treatment of sexuality, Hardy's classic tragedy and its proud and unconventional heroine, Eustacia Vye, are now considered one of his best.
