Rebound in full calf, spine with red and black labels lettered in gilt, by Riviere and Sons. Volumes I-III, VII, and IX rebacked. Upper cover of volume V and VIII detached but present. FIRST EDITION, WITH STERNE'S SIGNATURE at the head of the opening chapters of volume V, VII and IX. Tristram Shandy is considered to be the first modern novel.
