SMITH, CHRISTOPHER WEBB. 1793-1871.
Indian Ornithology. [Patna, India]: 1828.
Manuscript. 4 volumes. Small folio (282 x 222 mm). 301 original watercolor illustrations by Smith with manuscript explanatory text and introduction, 2 lithographed plates by Smith and Sir Charles D'Oyly, lithographed title pages by D'Oyley, lithographic headers mounted throughout. Half calf and marbled boards, gilt titles on spines. Rubbed, joints and hinges repaired, Volume IV upper joint cracked, minor spotting.
Provenance: H. Bradley Martin (bookplates; his sale, Sotheby's New York, June 7, 1989, lot 209).

ORIGINAL UNPUBLISHED MANUSCRIPT maquette for what would have been Smith's greatest work on the birds of India. The two lithographic plates used in this work were not included in his collaborations with D'Oyley, The Feathered Game of Hindostan and Oriental Ornithology, but were certainly produced by D'Oyley's Behar Amateur Lithographic Press. Both Smith and D'Oyley were in Patna with the Bengal Civil Service, where Smith was a judge and magistrate of the city court. In the preface Smith states that "not a single illustration has been drawn from any other work, but has been sketched from the subject and the history of each subject composed from personal observations...." Smith continued his collaboration with D'Oyley after he left Bengal, producing The Birds, Flowers, and Scenery of the Cape while staying at the Cape of Good Hope for health reasons. He later spent 11 years working on a detailed critique of the paintings in the Pitti Gallery in Florence, but the manuscript for that work was lost.
