5 volumes. 4to (282 x 230 mm). 147 hand-colored lithographed plates, errata leaf at end of Volume V. 20th century half black roan, spines gilt ruled in six compartments, red morocco title and volume number labels. Rubbed, scattered spotting and browning, offsetting from plates.

SECOND, AND FIRST COMPLETE EDITION. "Worthy of a place in the library of the naturalist by the side of Audubon and Wilson" (Sabin). The first edition had only the first three volumes, to which two additional volumes were added for this edition. Holbrook trained in medicine but gained a fascination with reptiles while traveling, which would lead him to become the first American zoologist to attempt a complete work on this subject.
