With turn-off barrel engraved with foliage around the muzzle and with beadwork around the breech, border engraved action signed within a beaded oval against foliage on one side, and 'London' with a beaded oval against a martial trophy on the other, thumbpiece safety-catch also locking the steel, folding trigger, figured flat-sided butt mounted with a border engraved steel plate (wear and some pitting) on each side decorated with foliage and pierced to form a barrel-key, and foliate silver escutcheon engraved with owner's crest within a line engraved oval, London proof marks

  • Thomas 1 Gill was established in Birmingham by about 1774 and is recorded as making 'swords, guns, pistols, saws, elastic spurs, pistols with bayonets and unparalled snuffers...'. In 1782 he as at 11 Charing Cross, London and was succeeded there in 1784 by John Knubley (Gunmaker to the Prince of Wales, Duke of Clarence and Prince Edward).
