Footnotes

  • In the spring of 1960, a Giardiniera (gardener) estate car was added to FIAT's Nuova 500 range. Built on a 100mm longer wheelbase than the saloon, the Giardiniera featured a single side-hinged rear door and carried its engine horizontally beneath the rear load platform, thus increasing available luggage space. Testing a Giardiniera in 1961, Autocar magazine was mightily impressed by FIAT's new baby: 'The Italians match their affinity with micro-motoring to a happy flair for making little cars really well, and within the limitations of its body dimensions and engine power the Giardiniera is a real masterpiece'. The miniature station wagon was found capable of carrying four adults and 127kg of luggage (alternatively, one adult and 200kg) while returning impressive fuel economy. The maximum speed achieved was exactly 60mph (96.5km/h). From the spring of 1968, Giardiniera production was transferred to Autobianchi and finally ceased in 1977.

Finished in light blue with beige vinyl upholstery, this charming little estate has the model's characteristic full-length folding sunroof. The vendor advises us that the car was comprehensively restored in 2005 and has only covered some 2,000 kilometres since. It benefited from a thorough service in the summer of 2017 when all oils were changed, a new battery and new fuel tank fitted, and the brakes overhauled with some new parts. Described as in good condition throughout, the car is offered with Italian registration documents and an ASI certificate. To many enthusiasts this is more of a head-turner than a Ferrari!
