Footnotes

  • Within 1970s Formula 1 history, Ronnie Peterson - so affectionately nicknamed 'SuperSwede' in period - was one of the sport's most universally loved figures. He would soon be regarded - even by triple-World Champion Jackie Stewart - as being the fastest Grand Prix driver of his time. At various points through his career he was most certainly the one by whom all rivals judged their own lap times and prospects of success. Ronnie would contest 123 World Championship-qualifying Grand Prix races, leading many until his over-stressed cars failed, and once they were built sufficiently robustly – and prepared well enough to endure the remarkable loads to which his talent subjected them – he won ten of those Grands Prix. He twice finished second in the Formula 1 Drivers' World Championship.
Here we offer what is, in reality, one of the world's most iconic, most historic and most collectible racing cars; the Formula 3 Tecno 69 in which Peterson launched his world-class career by winning no fewer than 16 races during the 1969 International season – headed by outright victory right here at Monte Carlo in the Formula 3 race supporting the 1969 Monaco Grand Prix...

The Italian Tecno company, of Bologna had been founded by the Pederzani brothers in 1961, and had become the first manufacturer to quantity-produce an offset ('sidewinder') racing kart chassis to take advantage of the newly developed air-cooled rotary motors produced by Parilla. Examples won the World Championship titles of 1964-65-66. Such success persuaded the Pederzani brothers to graduate to full-scale racing car production for Formula 3 and Formula 2 competition.

Consider first the 1969 Monaco Formula 3 race which Ronnie Peterson won behind the wheel of this, his Squadra Robardie-entered Tecno with its works-provided Novamotor-tuned 4-cylinder Ford engine. The 'Autosport' magazine report of that great race began:

"After a sensational battle, which lasted for 22 of the 23 laps of last Saturday's Monaco F3 race, Ronnie Peterson brought his powerful Tecno home ahead of Reine Wisell's Chevron. During their battle the pair shattered the lap record consistently and, putting up times that put a couple of the F1 cars to shame, they left Tim Schenken's Brabham and the works Alpine-Renaults some way behind. Jabouille just pipped Schenken at the finish, while Depailler finished a lonely fifth ahead of (1968 winner) Jean-Pierre Jaussaud's Tecno, which spent the race climbing up from a lowly grid position...."

Ronnie Peterson struggled with an engine fault during Formula 3 practice for that Monaco event, but his best lap time of 1 min 34.3secs - well inside Jaussaud's 1:36.2 record - saw him start from pole position for the 16-lap first Heat. After Jaussaud had led initially, Ronnie overtook him at the Gasworks Hairpin, pulling away thereafter to finish well ahead of the works Alpines ...

Heat 2 then saw Ronnie's great Swedish rival – and early mentor - Reine Wisell win in his works Chevron B15, while the 23-lap Formula 3 Final then saw a battle royal between these two very highly-rated and obviously fast-rising young Swedish stars. Each of them plainly considered himself to be Sweden's best, and on track around the Monte Carlo street circuit they battled wheel to wheel to decide the issue.

Initially it was Reine Wisell in the British-built Chevron car which led from Peterson's Tecno – the two young Swedes absolutely out-pacing the entire field. As 'Autosport' reported – "Peterson grabbed the lead after seven laps, the pair often approaching corners side by side and getting through with centimetres to spare.... By lap 16 Wisell had started to make his real effort to break away. He got 100 yards ahead at one stage, but on lap 21 the Tecno was by ...".

Ronnie then settled back in the comfortable cockpit of this Tecno 69 now offered here, and carefully paced his advantage to the finish – seeing the most important of that super-successful racing season's chequered flags from the unique vantage point of this Tecno-Novamotor 69's snug-fitting cockpit... It was a victory truly to savour, against the very best that the Formula 3 world had to offer, in Monte Carlo on Grand Prix weekend...

Ronnie Peterson's British journalist friend, Alan Henry, wrote of this race: "It was to provide the most thorough test of his ability so far. Next year he might be sleeping in a comfortable hotel bed, but for now he had to make do with the cramped quarters in the back of his Mercedes-Benz transporter in which he and his mechanic had travelled up from Rome and the previous weekend's race at Vallelunga. In southern Italy, his Tecno had faced an insignificant challenge from the locals. He'd won easily. Now he was to face his greatest rivals...

"There was intense argument over which of the two blond Swedes was the best. Wisell or Peterson? It was hard to know, for they'd done a pretty good job of avoiding each other for most of 1969 up until Monaco." Alan Henry recalled that British Formula 2 team manager Alan Rees was on hand, seeking star talent for the brand-new March Engineering company of which he was a founder. "Alan Rees was quick to point out they were both winning their races by substantial margins. 'So, when they both arrived at Monaco, I just had to be there'.

Alan Henry concluded: "The Scandinavian newspapers thrived on the rivalry between the two drivers. Reine, ever since the day he'd put Ronnie through the test session for his competition licence at Karlskoga, felt he was the senior Swede. Inwardly, Ronnie knew otherwise...". 'I knew the bloke had talent' observed Rees after it was all over" – and he decided to approach Ronnie Peterson the following weekend at Crystal Palace, London, to offer him a future drive.

The story of this great racing car effectively began when Peterson travelled down to Bologna in early 1969 with fellow racing driver and friend Sten Gunnarsson to collect the car. Subsequently the absolutely iconic career-launching Formula 3 Tecno offered here was campaigned by him with great success during the 1969 season, achieving no less than 16 victories. Please see the full list of results for details.

Into 1970 this ex-Squadra Robardie Ronnie Peterson Tecno was acquired by fellow-Swede Rolf Skoghag. He drove it into a fifth-place finish first time out at Falkenberg before struggling for the rest of the year. Ronnie Peterson was, in truth, a simply impossible act to follow as can be seen in the full results.

Staffan Svenby, Ronnie's business manager and godfather to his daughter Nina, re-acquired the car from Skoghag in 1971. Staffan had the car restored and it was subsequently displayed at the Ronnie Peterson Museum at his home town of Orebro and more recently at the motor sport college at Ring Knutstorp, inspiring the next generation of motor sport engineers. It was left to Nina after Staffan passed away and is thus offered direct from Peterson family ownership.

In light of its long-term museum display, the car would naturally benefit from close attention before being returned to the race track to continue its winning ways.
