Footnotes

  • The first ornithological monograph on a single family of birds, and the first folio work with lithographs of birds produced in England.

Lear lived near the Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park and began making his sketches of parrots there in 1830, at the tender age of 18. The remainder of them were based on birds in various private collections. In particular Lear brought a hitherto unseen scientific accuracy to the drawings, which he transferred himself onto stone for Hullmandel to print. The work was originally issued in 12 parts for 125 subscribers, but it was discontinued in 1832 due to the not unusual funding problems.
