Lot Details
REVOLUTIONARY WAR.
Manuscript in ink, being 14 leaves from orderly books from the Battle of Boston, from Washington's Aide-de-Camp, 28 pp, 4to, Roxbury & Cambridge, December 15-27, 29-31, 1775; January 1-12, 1776 [and] December 24, 26-28; January 1-3, 5, 7-10, 12, 1776, heavily chipped and browned, each leaf in archival sleeve.

After the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, which opened the hostilities in the Revolutionary War, Massachusetts militiamen established a siege line around British-held Boston. As the city was on a peninsula, the only land access was across the narrow neck that connected it to the mainland. Continental troops set up headquarters at Cambridge on the opposite side of the inner harbor, and Roxbury to the south of the city (now part of the greatly expanded city of Boston). These documents, written during the course of the siege, record a variety of official internal actions taken by the Continental Army. They would have been leaves in a larger Orderly Book that kept a running record of events. Among the documents there are records of courts martial and disciplinary actions, such as "... tried by the above court ... for robbing the Quarter Master Glls store ... therefore adjudge him to receive 10 lashes on his naked back."
