1986 Renault Sinpar 4L 'Gendarmerie' 4x4 Hatchback
Chassis no. VF111280000550039

•Landmark French car
•Very rare 4x4 model with opening soft-top roof
•Used by the French Gendarmerie
•Restored condition
•Registered in France

Introduced in 1961 to replace the rear-engined 4CV, the front-wheel drive Renault 4 was arguably the first successful mass-produced hatchback. It was Renault's answer to the Citroën 2CV, and like the latter featured long-travel torsion-bar suspension and a generously proportioned interior, making it the ideal choice for families and farmers. The Renault's 747cc water-cooled four-cylinder engine was more refined and more powerful than the 2CV's air-cooled twin (there was also a 603cc R3 version) and this advantage became even more marked following the introduction in 1963 of an 845cc unit. Larger, and more modern, engines were employed towards the end of production.

A 'no frills' workhorse, the practical Renault 4 would prove an enormous commercial success for the French manufacturer, which had sold one million of them after only 4½ years. The model was assembled in countries around the world, and by the time production ceased in 1994 over eight million Renault 4s had been built, making it the best-selling French car at that time.

Specialised variants included the 'Sinpar' 4x4 all-terrain model produced by the eponymous French transmissions manufacturer, whose design would later be taken over and built by Renault. The very rare and highly sought-after soft-top example offered here was used by the specialist PGHM (Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne) in the French mountains. This particular car was used at the Col de Tende in the Southern French Alps.

Completely restored by an Italian enthusiast and almost as good as new, the Sinpar was bought by the current owner in 2016. It is registered in France and comes complete with a blue light.
