Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
Universal International Pictures, 1948. U.S. 24-sheet poster, linen-backed. This is the largest poster made for the film and the only one known to exist. Under the working title of The Brain of Frankenstein, the comedy team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello set forth to appear in this production which poked fun at the Universal Pictures horror films that were popular with audiences in the 1930s. The most revered triumvirate of horror stars from those films–-known as "The Big Three"–-Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula, Glenn Strange as Frankenstein's monster, and Lon Chaney, Jr. as the Wolf Man, all of which appear larger than life-size on this spectacular poster, came on board but not without dignity; both Abbott and Costello agreed that these icons of horror would not be subject to any seltzer bottles or screen shenanigans that would necessitate redoing their makeup! Even Vincent Price made a "voice" cameo appearance as the Invisible Man. Directed by Charles Barton, the story centers around Count Dracula's desire to remove Costello's inferior brain and transplant it into the head of Frankenstein's monster, who is difficult to control; hence, the working title, which was ultimately changed to Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein in order to capitalize on the names of the stars and to convey the message that the film contained comedy as well as horror. Director Barton remarked that during the making of the film, "There were times when I thought Bela was going to have a stroke on the set. You have to understand that working with two zanies like Abbott and Costello was not the normal Hollywood set." This giant and spectacular billboard-size poster has the best images of the monsters, and most assuredly of Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula, of any poster from the film.
Provenance: the collection of Todd Feiertag.
