A Sarah Siddons Award gifted to Robert Osborne by Bette Davis
Gold-plated form of a woman (Sarah Siddons, an English actress) dressed in dramatic robes and sitting regally in a chair atop a rounded black base. The Sarah Siddons Award was a fictional honor made up by Joseph L. Mankiewicz for his film, All About Eve (1950). The statuette is the focus of All About Eve: Bette Davis ("Margo Channing") wins the award, Anne Baxter ("Eve Harrington") covets and eventually wins it, and in the final scene, the "new" actress also yearns for it. It appears throughout the film and is the ultimate symbol of thespian success. Bette Davis kept this statuette in her Connecticut home for many years. She eventually gifted it to Robert Osborne, who displayed it in his New York apartment. In a May 21, 2006 interview with the "New York Times," Osborne commented that the award was one of his most "precious possessions," not only for the Hollywood history behind it, but because it was given to him by such a dear friend. Accompanied by a copy of All About Eve: A Screenplay by Joseph L. Mankiewicz (New York: Random House, 1946) inscribed to Osborne by actor Hugh Marlowe, who plays the character of "Lloyd Richards" in the film: "Best to Bob / in this hectic / profession / Hugh Marlowe." The book also has an ownership signature ("Robert J. Osborne").
Statuette: 5.5 x 5.5 x 10.5 in.; book: 5.75 x 8.25 x 1 in.
