A pair of Betty Grable signed contracts
Comprising a Typed Document Signed ("Betty Grable"), 2 pp recto and verso, dated March 23, 1931, between Grable and Samuel Goldwyn Inc., Ltd., for the use of Grable's services as an actress, starting at $50.00 per week and extending to $400.00 per week, providing her options are picked up by the studio. Grable was 17 years old when this contract was signed. As most actresses did in the Golden Age of Hollywood, Grable trimmed 2 years off her age in her official studio biography and listed her birth year as 1916; the contract states unequivocally that she was born in 1914. Together with 2 additional contracts, 1 p each, signed ("Betty Grable"), wherein her options are picked up and her salary raised, dated September 2 and 9, 1931. Accompanied by 2 contracts, 2 pp each, dated November 3 and December 1, 1931, unsigned, arranging for the "loan" of Grable to Trem Carr Pictures and Educational Studio, Inc., to appear in their films, Galloping Through and Hollywood Girl using her first stage name, Frances Dean. Betty Grable was far from an overnight success; she toiled in B films and minor roles until she caught the public's attention in the 1940s and became Twentieth Century-Fox's biggest box office star.
