Footnotes

  • 1750-1850年 青白玉雕歲寒三友詩圖鼻煙壺

The pine, plum and bamboo are known collectively as the 'Three Friends of Winter', because of their ability to survive in harsh winter weather. As a motif, they symbolize strength and endurance under adversity.

The poem may be translated as:

Spring winds are scented with the fragrance of pine,
The rhythm of rustling bamboo sounds pure,
Beneath the moon the plum blossoms,
    Their beauty captured in painting.
