HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. 1899-1961.
Typed Letter Signed ("Papa"), 1 p, February 18, 1955, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, on Finca Vigia stationery, to Peter Viertel, with additional note in pencil to lower border, folds, smudge in upper right border.

WARM LETTER FROM HEMINGWAY TO PETER VIERTEL REGARDING THE SCREENPLAY FOR "OLD MAN AND THE SEA," and the frustration of interruptions to his writing. Written from Finca Vigia, Hemingway writes to Viertel, who wrote the screenplay for The Old Man and the Sea, explaining that although Leland Heyward would like to get he and Viertel down to Cuba to work with him on the screenplay, he is working at a stiff pace on an unfinished book. "I don't see any necessity to put my book out of business before [June] ... What sort of work I have to do with you we can do anywhere. On the boat as good a place as any." He apologizes for his gruff tone, "Excuse letter if sounds gruff. Isn't. Mary's father died last night and am getting her over to Gulfport." In a short post-script in pencil, he notes of his family, "Bum and wife just had a girl born. Gregory supposedly enroute to Africa to see Patrick." An interesting letter, shedding light on the working process.
