FIRST EDITION, AN UNOPENED COPY IN ORIGINAL BOARDS OF THE SECOND VOLUME OF THE FEDERALIST PAPERS, including the bulk of the essays, and defining more than any other work the formation of the American government. The second volume includes Madison's delineation of the separation of powers and the institutional importance of checks and balances (no 47, "The Particular Structure of the New Government and the Distribution of Power Among Its Different Parts" and no 51, "The Structure of the Government Must Furnish the Proper Checks and Balances Between the Different Departments"), as well as the construction of the Senate. The second volume also includes the first publication anywhere of the final eight essays, including the construction and powers of the Judiciary, and Hamilton's all-important argument for the Supreme Court and the concept of judicial review as a bulwark against Congress and the Executive (no 78, "The Judiciary Department"). Copies in the original binding are very rare.
