Footnotes

  • Engraved with the arms of John William Ward, Earl of Dudley of Dudley Castle in Staffordshire, Fourth Viscount Dudley and Ward, Viscount Ednam of Ednam in the county of Roxburgh, Baron Ward of Birmingham in the county of Warwick.

Dudley was Born 9 August 1781 and educated at Oxford University. He entered the House of Commons in 1802 as one of two representatives for Downton. He held this seat until 1803 and later represented Worcestershire and other constituencies from 1803 to 1823. The latter year Dudley succeeded his father in the peerage to the Viscounty and took his seat in the House of Lords. He was created an Earl 24 September 1827. Dudley served as Foreign Secretary from 1827-1828. He died unmarried on 6 March 1833. His two viscountcies and his earldom became extinct on his death while he was succeeded in his junior title of Baron Ward by his second cousin Reverend William Humble Ward.

Though the traditional family seat was Dudley Castle, most of the residential buildings were destroyed by fire in 1750. Consequently, the family moved to Himley Hall, near the town of Dudley in Staffordshire and the Palladian house became their principle home. In the 1770s Lancelot 'Capability' Brown was commissioned by John Ward, 1st Viscount Dudley and Ward to redesign the surrounding parkland.
