Footnotes

  • Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, 10th Duke of Hamilton and 7th Duke of Brandon (1767-1852) by Henry Raeburn (1756-1823)

Though engraved with the Royal Arms of George III, the form, decoration and date letter of this tureen match pieces in the sumptuous service commissioned for Alexander Douglas-Hamilton, then Marquis of Douglas, upon his appointment as Ambassador to the Court of St. Petersburg on 28 May 1806. As was custom, the commission was issued by the Crown and engraved with Royal Arms and then presented to diplomats on their retirement as partial recompense. The standard amount ambassadors received was 6,959 oz of plate. The Hamilton Service was one of Storr's most magnificent ambassadorial commissions in that it comprised in total 278 pieces weighing 9,513oz. It is believe that Hamilton supplemented his service with additional orders from Storr (see Dr. G. Evans, "French Empire Silver versus English Regency Silver", Art and Antiques, London, 16 June 2014, pp. 24-26). Hamilton received numerous titles including 10th Duke of Hamilton on his father's death in 1819.

The entire service was dispersed at auction of the collection of the Late Duke of Hamilton in 1919. Pieces from the service are now in the collections of the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens; the Gans Collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the White House, among others. A matching sauce tureen, lacking its lid but retaining engraving on opposite side sold Sotheby's New York, 20 May 2004. The pieces from this service to have come to auction most recently are a soup tureen and stand sold Christie's, New York, 22 May 2009, lot 162 and a mazarine sold Christie's London, 27 November 2012, lot 756.
