Footnotes

  • The firm of Edward F. Caldwell & Co. was founded in 1895 by Edward F. Caldwell (1851-1914), a portrait painter and designer from Waterville, New York, and Victor von Loosberg (1853-1942), a European-trained designer and draftsman. Caldwell's keen business sense and artistic talent combined with von Loosberg's abilities as a designer and first-hand knowledge of historical European models made them perfectly suited for success at a time when many important buildings were being constructed and fitted for electricity and the prevailing taste ran strongly to historicism and revival styles. Caldwell and von Loosberg would often take trips to Europe in order to add to their repertoire of designs for fixtures, combining technical know-how with a high artistic standard.

With a reputation for the highest quality and the ability to take large appointments, the firm flourished and their work was commissioned for such landmarks as the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, the Vanderbilt, Frick, Carnegie and Morgan residences, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and the White House.

An identical lamp to the Poseidon example of the pair offered here, entitled "Marble Turtle With Triton – Bronze," was exhibited by Edward F. Caldwell & Co. in 1903 at the annual exhibit of the Architectural League of New York in the galleries of the Fine Art Society on 215 West 57th Street. A pair of lamps of the same model, depicting Amphitrite and Poseidon, as offered here were sold in these rooms, The Elegant Home, March 26-27, 2018, lot 500 ($56,250). A single lamp featuring Poseidon was sold at Bonhams, New York, April 13, 2011, lot 2124 ($36,600).
