Engraved with a crest to front, (struck to foot Barquist Mark 9); height 6 1/4in (15.75cm); length 4 1/2in (11.5cm); weight approximately 5.25oz troy.

Footnotes

  • The crest is that of the Goelet family. The Goelet family was descended from French Huguenots who arrived in New York in the 1660s.

There are three other examples of pieces by Myers bearing the Goelet crest. One is a waiter dating from 1765-1776 possibly owned by Peter Goelet (1727-1811) and Elizabeth Ratsey (1734-1769) now in a private collection (see D.L. Barquist, Myer Myers: Jewish Silversmith in Colonial New York, New Haven, 2001, p. 146 and p. 148, fig. 58). The other two pieces date from the same period as the piece offered here. One is a pair of sugar tongs in a private collection ibid, p. 201-202, fig. 103 and the other is a sugar dish in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art ibid, pp 202-203, fig. 104. The beaded decoration on the sugar dish matches that on the milk pot offered here as does the armorial engraving on both the sugar tongs and the sugar dish, indicating the three were likely made as a set.
