Lost for decades before being rediscovered by Bonhams, Still life with vase is a fine example of the artist's Paris output from the 1920s. When Ghika moved to the French capital in 1923, he concentrated on interior and studio views, in the spirit of the early 20th century avant-garde movements, both in terms of style and subject matter. Here, an enigmatic wave of light from an unidentified source invades the room from the left, illuminating the ductile, oblong vase on the tablecloth, which also features prominently in Interior with mirror and vase, 1926 (lot 4), echoing de Chirico's metaphysical spaces or Matisse's psychologically acute interiors.1
