Footnotes

  • A reading chair of basically identical design and appearance to the present lot sold Christie's, New York, 31 March 2016, The Collection of Carroll Petrie, lot 1395. Both the offered example and this Christie's one are described as being in the manner of Morel and Hughes.

Nicholas Morel and Robert Hughes were a partnership of cabinet makers whose firm was located at 13 Great Marlborough Street in London during the period 1805-26. Among their various celebrated commissions, perhaps the most renowned was the furniture that they supplied for the Prince of Wales (later to become Prince Regent before ruling as George IV) at Carlton House, London.

The offered lot shares similar characteristics in common with a Morel and Hughes bergere provided in 1823 for the Ante Room to the Crimson Drawing Room at Northumberland House, which was the residence of the 3rd Duke of Northumberland. Both these models have similar shaped backs along with comparable carved gilded ornament to their legs and seatrails, F. Collard, Regency Furniture, 1985, Suffolk, p. 111, pl. 12.
