With two-stage twist barrel polygonal over most of its length and with gold spider fore-sight, turned girdle chiselled with a repeated design of foliage against a punched ground above a band of gold ropework, and decorated at the muzzle, mid-section and octagonal breech with encrusted gold panels of engraved symmetrical scrolling foliage against punched blued grounds, the muzzle involving a pair of fantastical birds and two hounds heads centred on a lion-mask, the mid-section with a sportsman in contemporary costume, two game birds and a seated hound above, the breech with two hounds and a bird in flight en suite, and enclosing two gold-lined barrelsmith's punzónes of Gaspar Y Rusta of Eibar (Neue Støckel 960, 961) between three gold-lined fleur-de-lys and surmounted by a gold-lined cross, a further foliate panel beyond including pairs of serpents and birds enclosing the gold-inlaid inscription 'de Callos De Herraduras', case-hardened breech and tang with gold foliage en suite against a punched ground, the former with gold plug, patilla lock encrusted with engraved gold foliage, the hammer chiselled in the round as Hercules and the Nemean lion, acting against the blued mainspring chiselled with scrollwork against a gold ground and with roller at the rear, highly figured fruitwood half-stock with fluted butt and cheek-piece, steel mounts decorated in gold en suite with the barrel and comprising heel-mounts and hinged rectangular sprung butt-trap cover with button catch, the latter inhabited by a bird and opening to reveal an aperture for a sling (missing), blued trigger-guard with foliate engraved spur, and with a tower between fleur-de-lys representing the arms of Castile within a chiselled foliate cartouche on the bow held in the beak of a chiselled eagle's head with gold eyes, the finial chiselled in relief as a knight's head with gold eyes and wearing a plumed close-helmet, side-nail plate chiselled with a mask between addorsed birds all with gold eyes and dots, the head of the barrel-bolt, the escutcheons and the fore-end cap all encrusted with gold foliate scrollwork, the latter chiselled as a monster also forming the rear ramrod-pipe and with gold eyes, ears and claws, blued ramrod-pipes pierced and chiselled with gold-inlaid scrollwork and each encrusted with a gold basket of flowers, sling-loops, ebonised ramrod with blued tip inlaid with gilt foliage between knurled gold bands, and in fine condition retaining nearly all its original finish

    Otega does not appear to be recorded, however it would seem highly likely that he either worked in Eibar or was influenced by the products of the famous Zuloaga family and others working in the region during the 19th Century.
