Footnotes

  • La Tauromaquia was commissioned in 1927 by Gustavo Gili for the "Ediciones de la Cometa" but the book was not printed until 1957. Picasso took inspiration from the writings of Jose Delgado - alias Pepe Illo, a famous bullfighter who published a tauromaquia manual in 1796 – which Goya had also illustrated in his famous series of 33 etchings depicting the art of bullfighting.
Picasso started working on the plates after he went to the Easter Corrida at Cannes in April 1957. In a frenetic explosion of creativity, he took his brush and painted most of the series in one afternoon.
Picasso's passion for bullfighting goes back to his childhood in native Málaga where he attended the 'corrida' every Sunday afternoon with his father. Here the illustrations not only complement the text but actually bring it to life, inspired by the live spectacle of the corrida itself.
