Footnotes

  • The Waterwheel Falls are so named because of their extraordinary cyclical appearance, created by a raging torrent of water first hitting a series of ledges which then becomes a revolving plume when subjected to a forceful upward gust of wind. In his magnificent photograph of these falls, Adams manages to fully convey the power of this Yosemite phenomenon which can reach heights of up to 30 feet.

This image is unique in this mural size. There is only one one other extant print, an 8 x 10 inch version, at The Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona.
