Le Pin
A unique vertical of 17 vintages, in double-magnum format, from this iconic Pomerol estate, consigned to this sale direct from the property.

Le Pin was first produced in 1979 after Jacques Thienpont bought the one-hectare plot of vines for 1 million francs. The family already owned neighbouring Vieux Château Certan as well as the eponymous Belgian wine importing business. The name comes from a solitary pine tree that shades the property. The wine is made from 100% Merlot grown on a south-facing slope of pink pebbles and very low yields. A new winery, designed by Belgian architects Robbrecht en Daem, was built for the 2011 vintage. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in stainless steel tanks before maturation for 14-18 months in 100% new French oak casks. Production is around 600-700 cases a year; no wine was produced in 2003 or 2013.

Le Pin quickly established itself at the top of the Pomerol hierarchy after the 1982 vintage was awarded 100 points by Robert Parker. Despite the increase in size to nearly 3 hectares, the wine remains very rare, and especially so in double-magnums.
