Movement: gilt full plate with fusee, tapered cylindrical pillars, brass escape wheel, steel cylinder, pierced balance cock chased with scrolls and grotesque mask, diamond endstone, signed gilt dust cap, No. 927
Dial: later white enamel, roman chapters, gold beetle and poker hands
Case: outer repousse and chased with Classical scene depicting Alexander crowning Roxanna within pierced scroll border signed "Moser f"; inner with scroll pierced band, casemaker's mark IW, star above, for John Ward
Signed: movement and dust cap, inner case numbered

Footnotes

  • Alexander married Roxana, the daughter of a chieftain of the Sogdiana, one of the conquered territories of Asia. The marriage, as a theme depicted in 17th century and later paintings, refers to a passage in Plutarch who characterized Alexander's pursuit of Roxana as "...The only Passion which he, the most temperate of men, was overcome by."
