THE FERRARI 400GT

Launched at the 1976 Paris Salon, the 400GT was the last of Ferrari's legendary carbureted V12s. Utilizing a massive 4.8-liter 4 cam V12 engine free from pollution controls and fitted with six twin choke Weber DCOE carburetors, the engine produced 340bhp and 347 foot pounds of torque. Ferrari's splendidly equipped 2+2 featured self-levelling independent rear suspension, power-assisted steering, electric windows and air conditioning.
Just 147 examples of the 5 speed 400GT were produced from 1977 until 1979, making it a rare swan song for the iconic carbureted Ferrari V12.

THE MOTORCAR OFFERED

Serial number 21111 was ordered new with a 5-speed manual transmission, which is verified by its engine's C000 internal code for manual transmission equipped cars.

Finished in black over tan hides with black inserts, the car came to California in the 1980s and remained there for some time. Upon acquisition by its current owner in 2016, an extensive restoration and refurbishment was undertaken to prepare the car for the highest level of concours competition while retaining its original finishes to the extent possible. Understood by the vendor to be an original mileage example, showing just over 73,700 kilometers, the car was mechanically gone through, tuned and fitted with a new ANSA exhaust system and new tires. Cosmetically, work began on the bottom with disassembly of the suspension and refinishing of the undercarriage. The engine compartment was fully detailed for concours competition with care taken to preserve original patinas where possible. The paint and interior were restored to achieve as close as possible to a new car look while maintaining respect for original finishes wherever possible.

The car is reported to drive superbly with the massive V12 providing effortless thrust accompanied by a glorious soundtrack featuring six burbling Weber carburetors and wondrous V12 sound emanating from the Ansa exhaust as the 5-speed manual transmission is put through its paces.

As the swan song of the famous carbureted Ferrari V12, this extremely rare 5 speed 400GT makes an essential contribution to any collection of important Ferraris. The superb performance, elegant color scheme and high level of presentation make this example ready to be shown and enjoyed.

Saleroom notices

  • Please note, this Ferrari 5 speed manual 400GT was the last carbureted Ferrari and only 147 examples of this model were made between 1976 and 1979. It is not to be confused with the 400 Automatic of which 355 were made. In 2016, extensive restoration and refurbishment was undertaken to prepare this car for the highest level of concours competition. A mechanical examination revealed excellent results as would be expected given the car's low mileage of less than 74,000 kilometers (46,000 miles) which the owner believes is original. Mechanically, the car needed only to be serviced, tuned and fitted with a new ANSA exhaust system and new tires. Cosmetically, the suspension was disassembled and refinished, along with the entire undercarriage. The engine compartment was fully detailed for concours competition. The paint and interior were restored to achieve as close as possible to a new car level of presentation while maintaining respect for original finishes wherever possible. As the swan song of the famous carbureted Ferrari V12, this extremely rare 5 speed 400GT makes an essential contribution to any collection of important Ferraris. The superb performance, elegant color scheme and high level of presentation including original books and records make this example ready to be shown and enjoyed. The printed catalog includes copy from a prior edit and does not reflect the most up-to-date version that was included in the online catalog.
