George H. Daw & Co. is recorded at 57 Threadneedle Street between 1861 - 1887 and is generally regarded as the father of British centre-fire shotgun ammunition.
In 1861 Daw purchased the English right to Francois Schneider's patent for breech-loading centre-fire guns, adding his own additions with his 1862 patent. The considerable ease with which Daw's guns could be used compared to their predecessors brought Daw both fame and fortune, a position he fiercely protected with the threat of legal proceedings resulting from an patent infringement. He eventually lost his monopoly on centre-fire cartridges to Eley Bros., as his patent covered only Schneider's design and not centre-fire cartridges as a whole
