There a few makes more obscure than Westfield, which took its name from the eponymous town in Massachusetts, USA and was only in existence from 1901 to 1903. Founder Charles J Moore's first Westfield automobile of 1902 was steam-powered, and in 1903 he added a four-cylinder petrol-engined 16hp car to the range, though it appears that it never entered production. Unusually, Moore preferred to sell his petrol-engined models in chassis-only form, 'ready for power', leaving the customer to install the engine of their choice. The steamers appear soon to have taken a back seat, with Moore's advertising concentrating on his chassis, which were available with either shaft or chain drive and a wide variety of body styles. When his Westfield venture folded, Charles Moore moved on to join Packard's engineering department.

The Westfield offered here is powered by an advanced 2½-litre twin-cylinder overhead-camshaft engine built by Remington. However, the latter was not the firm that had forged its not inconsiderable reputation making firearms and typewriters, but one set up by Philo E Remington, grandson of the original company's founder. Unlike his grandfather's business, Philo's soon collapsed, though he did make a further two attempts at automobile manufacturing, neither of which was ultimately successful.

The current owner purchased this Westfield in Cleveland, Ohio in 2006. The car had been restored at great expense by its then owner who, although he had agreed to supply the substantial history file, later reneged on the deal and kept it. It is understood that the Westfield had been purchased by a previous owner from the Barney Pollard Collection in the late 1970s. Restoration commenced but stalled, and the car stood partially restored until purchased in the early 1990s by the immediately preceding owner. The latter then set about a 'no expense spared' concours-standard restoration that took many years, following which the car was exhibited at concours d'élégance events around the USA, usually winning. Several boxes of trophies are included in the sale.

Since its acquisition by the current owner the Westfield has been rallied extensively, covering over 3,000 miles virtually without incident. It has also won several more concours trophies, including at the Regent Street and Chopard events (receiving a 1st prize at the latter) as well as taking part in the Tour du Le Mans. The car has been well cared-for by the fastidious owner and looks as fresh as the day its restoration was completed. The Westfield is capacious, very powerful, fast (almost 50mph) and most of all has proved to be utterly reliable. We are advised that it is also very easy to drive. Ready to enjoy, this ultra-rare American Veteran is offered with a VCC Dating Certificate and V5C document.
