The Paris Municipal Police began using specially modified Renault 4CVs in the early 1950s having previously relied mainly on the Citroën 'Traction Avant'. The idea of using the Renault 4CV is credited to Mr Gobin, Director of the Paris Municipal Police, and the first prototype was commissioned from the Parisian coachbuilder Currus, which would go on to build the entire fleet. Modifications to the production version included cutaway door windows, enabling the easy use of firearms when required, and a tuned and more powerful engine to facilitate the pursuit of fleeing criminals. Additional equipment included a short-wave radio and flashing lights, and the 'PP' (Prefecture of Police) 4CVs were painted in distinctive black and white livery, hence their nickname 'pie' (magpie). Following successful tests of the prototype, the first batch of 15 PP 4CVs was delivered in March 1955. After objections from Renault that the modifications to the doors breached the 4CV's official certification, the remaining 60 cars delivered had standard bodies. Compact, manoeuvrable and fast, the modified 4CVs proved to be the ideal vehicles for policing the crowded roads of the French capital.

This example comes with certification stating that it was delivered to the Prefecture of Police on 18th April 1955. It is one of the first 15 'production' cars and has the cut down door windows. The plate fixed to the body by Carrosserie Currus is still present. The vendor purchased this car 50 years ago from a Mr Anquetil, who had bought two 4CVs from the Police (see Amicale Police Patrimoine documentation on file). Restored in France in 2000, the car is presented in generally very good condition. Accompanying documentation consists of a French Carte Grise and Contrôle Technique, and a Renault Certificate of Authenticity proving that this car was delivered to the Police. The car also comes with 16 DVDs of feature films in which the 4CV Pie has appeared. These include Les Veinards starring France Anglade and Louis de Funès, L'Ours by Edmond Sechan, La Panthère Rose (Pink Panther), Comme un Cheveu sur la Soupe starring Louis de Funès, and the 1957 motion picture Sois belle et tais-toi starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, Henri Vidal and Alain Delon. This particular 4CV has an opening sunroof, which was fitted in 1960 for its appearance L'Ours (see photograph on file).
